A small amount of fluid that is discharged from the vagina is considered to be normal. The glands present in the walls of vagina as well as uterine cervix produce a small amount of fluid which is used to clean the vagina. This fluid doesn't have a pungent smell and is thick in texture. It is generally white in color. Due to some reasons, the vaginal discharge may become thick in texture especially during menstrual cycle, breast feeding and when a female gets involved in any form of sexual activity. But at times, the women may encounter smelly vaginal discharge. This might indicate the presence of an underlying infection in the vagina.

Bacterial vaginosis may give rise to smelly vaginal discharge. In the women afflicted with bacterial vaginosis, bacteria of several forms grow inside the vagina of women. The growth of bacteria inside the vagina produces smelly vaginal discharge. This disease was previously known as Gardnerella vaginitis. The name of this disease was later changed to bacterial vaginosis in order to indicate that several forms of bacteria can reside inside the vagina of women and grow there to their maximum size. This disease does not have any adverse side effects on the health of the women.

This disease is characterized by the presence of only one symptom which is the production of smelly vaginal discharge. No symptoms are observed in few women suffering from bacterial vaginosis. When a female gets involved in any form of sexual activity, a smelly vaginal discharge is produced.

Bacterial vaginosis may be caused due to the following reasons:

• Lactobacilli which are responsible for producing hydrogen peroxide inside the vagina diminish.
• The growth of anaerobic bacteria surges inside the vagina of women.
• Some women clean their vagina using sprays which might facilitate the growth of bacteria.
• When a female gets involved in sexual activity with different partners, she might get afflicted with bacterial vaginosis.
• Smoking is one of the major factors which aggravate the condition of women.

The various measures which can be used in order to treat bacterial vaginosis are as under:

• Antibiotics such as Metronidazole can be used to treat women suffering from bacterial vaginosis. This antibiotic is available in 2 forms namely pill and gel.
• A cream called vaginal clindamycin cream can be used to stop the production of smelly vaginal in women.

These medicines do not have any adverse effects. However, at times yeast infection may be caused as a side effect of using these antibiotics and cream. If not treated fully after a complete dosage of the antibiotics, a fresh course of antibiotics should be given to the women suffering from bacterial vaginosis.
